Melvine Malard has completed a move from Manchester United to Chelsea, the London club announced on Monday. The French international forward has signed a four-year contract with Chelsea, continuing her career in the Women’s Super League. While the transfer fee was not officially disclosed, English media reports suggest it is close to €1 million (£850,000).
Malard, 26, joined Manchester United three seasons ago and made a significant impact, scoring 23 goals and providing 16 assists in 95 appearances across all competitions. She was part of the Manchester United team that won the FA Cup in 2023. Her departure leaves a void in United’s attacking line-up, although the club has been actively reshaping its squad under new management.
The move to Chelsea reunites Malard with manager Sonia Bompastor, who previously coached her at Olympique Lyonnais. Bompastor led Lyon to Champions League victory in 2022 with Malard as part of the squad. The familiarity with her coach was a key factor in her decision, according to Malard herself.
“My goal is to become better every day and win trophies,” Malard stated in a club press release. “I know Chelsea has always had this objective, and I have this ambition too.” She will also link up with fellow French international Sandy Baltimore at Chelsea, further strengthening the club’s French contingent.
