Paolo Maldini has left his position with the Italy national team following disagreements over the appointment of Andrea Pirlo as head coach, according to Italian National Olympic Committee president Giovanni Malagò. The departure, confirmed on July 28th, was described as a “consensual separation” and not the result of a conflict, though Malagò acknowledged differing opinions regarding Pirlo’s selection.
Maldini had been involved with the Italian national team setup in a directorial role, contributing to the team’s successful Euro 2020 campaign. His departure comes after Pirlo was named the new Italy coach, a decision that reportedly caused friction within the national team’s leadership. Malagò explicitly stated that the difference in views on Pirlo’s appointment was central to the separation.
Prior to rejoining the national setup, Maldini enjoyed a legendary playing career with AC Milan, spending virtually his entire professional life with the Rossoneri. He transitioned into a technical director role at Milan in 2019, overseeing a period of rebuilding and eventual Serie A title win in 2022. He left his post at Milan in June 2023 after disagreements with the club’s ownership over transfer strategy.
Leonardo, another former AC Milan player and director, also departed his role alongside Maldini. While Malagò also described Leonardo’s exit as consensual, it is understood to be linked to the same disagreements surrounding Pirlo’s appointment. Leonardo has previously held directorial positions at Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan, demonstrating a wealth of experience in football administration.
The appointment of Pirlo, a World Cup winner with Italy as a player, represents a shift in direction for the national team. He had previously managed Juventus’s under-23 side and Salernitana, with limited success, making his appointment a somewhat controversial one.
