Daniel Maldini will return to Atalanta following a loan spell at Lazio, with the Serie A club opting not to exercise their option to buy the forward. According to reports from Italy, Lazio failed to qualify for European competition, triggering the end of the loan deal which included a €14 million release clause. Maldini initially joined Lazio in January seeking more consistent playing time, making 14 appearances for the club and contributing with 2 goals and 2 assists in 827 minutes of play.
Atalanta originally signed Maldini from Monza, believing him to be a valuable long-term investment and a potential addition to the Italian contingent within the squad. Despite his initial arrival at Atalanta not yielding significant minutes, the club maintained a positive view of his capabilities. During his time with Lazio, manager Maurizio Sarri experimented with Maldini in a ‘false nine’ role, a tactical adjustment that reportedly led to improvements in his game.
Interestingly, Maldini will now reunite with Sarri at Atalanta, as the former Lazio coach was recently appointed as the new manager of the Bergamo-based club. This continuity is expected to accelerate Maldini’s integration into the team, as he is already familiar with Sarri’s tactical approach, particularly the 4-3-3 formation. While a role as a central striker appears unlikely given the presence of Gianluca Scamacca, Nikola Krstovic, and Giacomo Raspadori, Maldini is anticipated to be utilized as a versatile attacking option on the flanks.
Analysts suggest Maldini’s strengths lie in his vision and quick thinking, allowing him to anticipate play and create opportunities for teammates. Improvements in his finishing, an area previously criticized, were also noted during his time at Lazio. With Atalanta also potentially reshaping their midfield following the reported departure of Ederson to Manchester United, Maldini’s arrival adds another attacking dimension to the squad as the club prepares for the upcoming season. The appointment of Cristiano Giuntoli as the new sporting director suggests further changes are likely as Atalanta looks to build upon its recent successes.
