Donyell Malen’s transfer to Roma has been made permanent following the club’s qualification for European competition, the club confirmed on Tuesday. The obligation to buy was triggered by Roma securing a spot in at least the Europa League, a clause included in the initial loan agreement with Aston Villa, as well as Malen reaching 50% playing time this season. Aston Villa will receive a fee of €25 million, in addition to the €2 million already paid for the loan spell, and a 10% sell-on clause for any future transfer of the player.
Malen will sign a four-year contract with Roma, earning €4 million per season. The 25-year-old forward initially joined Roma on loan in January, quickly becoming a key player in Daniele De Rossi’s squad. He has contributed significantly to their push for European qualification, scoring several important goals. Prior to joining Roma, Malen spent time at PSV Eindhoven, where he established himself as a prolific goalscorer in the Eredivisie.
The completion of Malen’s transfer provides Roma with stability in their attacking options as they prepare for next season’s European campaign. Aston Villa will look to reinvest the funds generated from the sale, potentially strengthening their own squad ahead of a competitive Premier League season. The deal represents a successful outcome for both clubs, with Roma securing a talented player and Aston Villa realizing a profit on their initial investment.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa are reportedly intensifying their pursuit of Roma winger Thiago Soulé. According to sources, the Premier League club are prepared to offer €40 million for the Argentinian international. Roma could consider the offer, as it would represent a significant profit – approximately €25 million – on their initial investment in the player. Roma manager Daniele De Rossi is already considering potential replacements, with Ryan Summerville of West Ham, Antonio Nusa of RB Leipzig, and Bryan Tel of Tottenham Hotspur all on his shortlist. Soulé is currently in discussions with Roma’s ownership regarding his future.
