Ukrainian midfielder Ruslan Malinovskyi has completed a move to Trabzonspor after his contract with Genoa expired, the club confirmed on Monday. The 30-year-old joins the Turkish Super Lig side on a free transfer, seeking regular playing time ahead of the upcoming European Championship.
Malinovskyi spent six and a half years in Italy with Genoa and Atalanta, becoming a fan favorite for his attacking contributions. He recently finished the Serie A season with Genoa, playing a role in their successful fight against relegation under coach Alberto Gilardino. He expressed gratitude to both clubs and the fans in a recent interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, describing Genoa as becoming a second home for him and his family.
The midfielder’s time at Atalanta saw him become a key player, particularly during the 2019-20 season where they narrowly missed out on a Champions League semi-final appearance, losing to Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals. Malinovskyi recalled the heartbreak of that defeat, emphasizing the belief within the squad that they could have gone on to win the competition. He also dismissed reports of a fractured relationship with former Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini, stating it was a normal situation where new arrivals led to reduced playing time.
Malinovskyi’s recent form has been impacted by a serious ankle injury sustained in February, but he made a remarkably quick recovery, returning to action within 149 days. He credited the medical staff at Genoa for their support and dedication during his rehabilitation. The player spoke of the frightening moment of the injury, describing the sound of his ankle breaking as similar to a breadstick snapping.
He sought advice from former Genoa teammate and Trabzonspor player Ekuban regarding the club and the atmosphere, receiving positive feedback about the passionate fanbase and the stadium. Malinovskyi stated his desire to play in a high-pressure environment and feels Trabzonspor will provide that. The move to Trabzonspor represents a chance for Malinovskyi to secure a place in Ukraine’s squad for Euro 2024 and potentially return to Champions League football.
