Manchester City have set a new record for a transfer involving an English player, securing the services of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for a reported fee of €135 million. The Sky Blues announced an agreement with Forest on Thursday for the 23-year-old midfielder, who is currently with the England national team at the World Cup. A medical examination was reportedly conducted in Kansas, where the England squad is based.
The transfer fee surpasses the previous record for an English player, held by Jude Bellingham’s move from Borussia Dortmund to Real Madrid (€127 million). It represents the third-highest transfer fee in Premier League history, trailing only the arrivals of Alexander Isak to Liverpool (€150 million) and Florian Wirtz to Liverpool (€136 million) last summer. Anderson, who has earned 13 caps for England, featured in 50 matches across all competitions for Forest last season.
Anderson’s move to the Etihad Stadium marks the first major signing under new manager Enzo Maresca, who was appointed earlier this week to succeed Pep Guardiola. Maresca’s arrival signaled a potential shift in City’s transfer strategy, and the pursuit of Anderson suggests an intent to maintain a high level of quality in midfield despite Guardiola’s departure. Anderson’s consistent performances for Forest, combined with his displays for England, have quickly established him as one of the most promising midfielders in the league.
Forest signed Anderson from Newcastle United in 2022, where he had progressed through the academy ranks. While he didn't establish himself as a regular starter for the Magpies, his loan spell at Swansea City in the Championship demonstrated his potential, leading to a permanent move to the City Ground. He quickly became a key player for Forest, showcasing his technical ability, work rate, and passing range. The substantial fee paid by Manchester City reflects his rapid development and perceived potential.
The acquisition of Anderson provides Manchester City with a dynamic and versatile midfield option. He is capable of playing in a variety of roles, including as a central midfielder, attacking midfielder, and even as a winger. This flexibility will be valuable for Maresca as he looks to implement his tactical approach. The transfer also indicates City’s commitment to investing in young, English talent, bolstering their squad with a player who has a high ceiling.
