Manchester City have agreed a deal to sign Jeremy Monga from Leicester City, preempting a transfer that had long appeared set to take the 16-year-old to Arsenal. The agreement, which includes a fee of £10million, was reached after Arsenal were unwilling to meet Leicester’s valuation of the promising midfielder. Personal terms between City and Monga have also been agreed, according to TEAMtalk.
Monga, who will turn 17 later this month, had been the subject of intense interest from several clubs, with Arsenal spending over a month in negotiations with Leicester and the player’s representatives. Despite their efforts, the Gunners ultimately declined to match the Foxes’ asking price, creating an opening for City to move decisively.
The move represents a significant coup for City’s recruitment team, who have been monitoring Monga’s progress throughout the summer. The England youth international has already signed professional terms with Leicester, which will officially come into effect on July 10th, meaning any interested club had to negotiate directly with the Foxes.
Monga’s potential attracted attention from a host of other Premier League clubs, including Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United. Several European giants, such as Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus, also expressed interest, holding discussions with the player and his representatives. However, City’s late intervention and willingness to meet Leicester’s financial demands proved decisive.
The transfer follows a busy period for Manchester City, who recently announced the club-record signing of Elliot Anderson for £116million and completed a €25million deal for Mathys Detourbet, who has been immediately loaned to Monaco. City are expected to sanction further sales to balance their squad, but the addition of Monga demonstrates their commitment to securing young talent. The capture of Monga further strengthens City’s academy and provides another exciting prospect for the future.
