Manchester United have been put on alert as Rafael Leao has indicated his desire to leave AC Milan in search of a new challenge. The 26-year-old Portuguese international has been a key player for the Rossoneri since joining in 2019, accumulating 80 goals and 65 assists in 291 appearances.
Leao recently stated his ambition to experience a different league, telling Sport TV Portugal, “I’m proud as I made history at AC Milan but I want new chapter… I feel ready to play in another league. I did my best for Milan, but it’s time to try another challenge.” He also revealed a long-held affinity for Manchester United, stemming from his admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo, stating he used to watch the club because of the Portuguese superstar.
Representatives for Leao have been proactively exploring potential transfer options, with a move to the Premier League being a particularly attractive prospect. According to Graeme Bailey, a transfer insider, Leao was previously offered to several top English clubs, including United, as early as May 1st.
AC Milan are reportedly open to a sale for a fee of around €50million (£43.1m / $58.7m). While Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain have also been informed of Leao’s availability, there is now a “particular focus” on a potential move to England. Manchester United have previously scouted the player extensively, and Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea have also had approaches from Leao’s camp.
It remains to be seen if United will make a formal offer, but competition for Leao’s signature is expected to be significant. The player may also delay a final decision until after his participation in the upcoming World Cup, where he is expected to play a prominent role for Portugal. A successful tournament could further increase his market value and the number of potential suitors.
