Manchester United have registered ‘concrete’ interest in AC Milan centre-back Strahinja Pavlovic, according to a report in Gazzetta dello Sport. The development comes as Michael Carrick prepares for his first full season as manager at Old Trafford, with significant squad investment anticipated ahead of a return to Champions League football.
The 24-year-old Serbian defender joined Milan from Red Bull Salzburg two years ago for a fee of €18m and has since established himself as a key player in the Serie A side. Pavlovic has drawn comparisons to former Manchester United stalwart Nemanja Vidic, not only due to his nationality but also for his commanding presence and aerial ability – he stands at 6ft 4in. He has also demonstrated goalscoring prowess, netting four Serie A goals this season.
Crystal Palace were reportedly the first club to express interest in Pavlovic, exploring the possibility of a transfer. However, Manchester United’s interest is described as ‘concrete’ and ‘noteworthy’ by the Italian publication. While Milan are initially reluctant to sell one of their key players, their participation in next season’s Champions League could dictate their stance.
Currently, Milan sit fourth in Serie A, level on points with Roma and two points ahead of Como, meaning Champions League qualification is not yet assured. Failure to secure a Champions League spot could force the club to consider offers for Pavlovic, with a price tag of around €40m (£35m) being suggested. The potential arrival of Pavlovic would add depth and quality to United’s defensive options as Carrick looks to build a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts. A successful transfer could provide long-term stability in a position that has seen frequent changes in recent years.
