Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero, with the Argentine international potentially available for a fee between £40 million and £50 million. The potential transfer comes as Tottenham appear prepared to sell the player this summer, according to sources who have spoken with TEAMtalk.
Tottenham insider John Wenham believes Romero would be a “really good signing” for United, particularly due to his existing partnership with Lisandro Martinez in the Argentina national team. Wenham suggested that United’s coaching staff may see value in replicating that successful defensive pairing at Old Trafford. He did note an earlier link to Argentina as potentially agent-driven, but now views the United move as a viable option.
Romero joined Tottenham in 2021, initially on loan from Atalanta, before making the move permanent. He has become a key figure in the Spurs defence, making 156 appearances for the club and winning the Europa League in 2025. However, with Tottenham undergoing a significant overhaul under Roberto De Zerbi, several players, including Romero, are expected to be moved on as part of a squad rebuild.
Several other European clubs are also monitoring Romero’s situation, including Inter Milan, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid. Real Madrid are reportedly hesitant to meet Tottenham’s £50 million valuation, potentially favouring a deal at the lower end of the price range. While Serie A remains a possibility for Romero, a reunion with Martinez at Manchester United presents a compelling alternative, potentially strengthening United’s defensive options and providing a familiar dynamic at the back. The club have already secured two midfielders this summer and are actively pursuing further additions.
