Manchester United are preparing a late attempt to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, challenging Manchester City’s advanced negotiations for the 23-year-old England international. According to reports, United will make a ‘serious play’ to divert Anderson to Old Trafford despite the player already agreeing personal terms with City.
This pursuit comes as United seek to overhaul their midfield options this summer, with Casemiro expected to depart for Inter Miami and Manuel Ugarte transfer-listed. The club has already secured a full agreement with Atalanta’s Ederson Silva, with the Brazilian international set to sign a five-year contract for a fee of around €45m / £38m. Ederson has prioritized a move to United, rejecting other potential suitors.
While Ederson is considered the first midfield addition, United’s recruitment team, influenced by Michael Carrick, had identified Sandro Tonali of Newcastle United as a key target. However, the preference of INEOS, the club’s new ownership group, is reportedly Elliot Anderson. The situation has become more urgent as talks between City and Forest are reportedly progressing quickly, with a deal potentially finalized before the end of May.
Sources indicate that City’s incoming manager, Enzo Maresca, is keen to work with Anderson, and the player is not deterred by Pep Guardiola’s recent departure. Fabrizio Romano has also reported that United have been consistently in contact with Anderson’s representatives, demonstrating their strong interest. Should United fail to secure Anderson, they have a shortlist of alternative targets including Carlos Baleba, Aurelien Tchouameni, Tonali, and Adam Wharton.
