Manchester United have agreed to sell Marcus Rashford to Barcelona for a fee of £13 million, according to Football Insider. This represents a significant reduction from the initial €30 million (£26m) option to buy included in Rashford’s loan agreement with the Spanish club.
The 28-year-old spent last season on loan at Barcelona, where he was a key player in Hansi Flick’s side’s LaLiga title win. Rashford reportedly wants to make the move permanent, and Flick has been actively pushing for the deal to be completed.
Barcelona had initially hoped to negotiate a lower fee, particularly after signing Anthony Gordon and making a substantial bid for Julian Alvarez. A recent report in the Daily Mail suggested Barcelona were preparing a bid of just £13 million, a figure that was later verified by The Times, who stated the club was prepared to pay only half of the original buy clause following the Gordon signing.
According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, United have performed a U-turn on their valuation of Rashford, now willing to accept the reduced offer. The change in stance is partly due to Rashford’s wages, which have increased following Barcelona’s Champions League qualification.
United are actively pursuing midfield reinforcements this summer, with Ederson already joining from Atalanta and further additions expected. Selling Rashford, despite his quality, will free up a significant portion of the wage bill – approximately £325,000 per week – and provide funds for new signings. While selling a player of Rashford’s calibre for such a fee is not ideal, the club prioritizes strengthening other areas of the squad under Michael Carrick. This sale allows United to reinvest funds and address key positions within the team.
