Manchester United are preparing a bid for West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, according to journalist Ben Jacobs, as their pursuit of Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni appears to be losing momentum. The potential move for Fernandes comes after co-owners INEOS were dealt a setback in their attempt to secure Tchouameni’s services.
TEAMtalk’s Fraser Fletcher initially reported United’s interest in Fernandes on May 14th, with the club already holding discussions with the player’s representatives. Sources indicate Fernandes is keen on a move to Old Trafford. West Ham’s relegation to the Championship makes retaining the Portugal international unlikely.
Jacobs reported on X that West Ham are seeking £84 million for Fernandes, double the amount they paid Southampton for him, with no relegation release clause included in his contract. Both Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain are also monitoring the situation, though West Ham need to generate over £100 million in player sales this summer.
Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano has stated that Real Madrid have no intention of selling Tchouameni, despite the player being identified as United’s “dream target” by manager Michael Carrick. Romano highlighted concerns over Tchouameni’s high salary and Real Madrid’s determination to keep him. The club views him as a potential replacement for Casemiro, possessing a winning mentality and the ability to contribute both defensively and offensively.
United are also nearing the completion of a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson Silva, with Romano stating the transfer is all but confirmed. The club intends to sign two new midfielders this summer, and Ederson’s arrival is expected to be finalized around a fee of €40-45 million. This would be Carrick’s first major signing as permanent manager, signaling a focus on strengthening the midfield ahead of the new season.
