Manchester United are reportedly nearing the completion of a double deal to bolster their midfield options, with agreements for Atalanta’s Ederson and Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali said to be progressing well. According to Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb, a deal for Ederson is ‘almost complete’ with a reported fee of €50million (£43.2m).
The pursuit of midfield reinforcements comes as a priority for United this summer, following the departure of Casemiro and inconsistent performances from players other than Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo. Earlier targets including Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, and Carlos Baleba were considered, but potential high price tags presented obstacles.
TEAMtalk reports that United have recently intensified their efforts to sign Ederson, holding talks with Atalanta regarding the Brazilian midfielder. The interest aligns with Michael Carrick’s ambition to reshape the squad. Ederson has established himself as a key player in Serie A, known for his defensive capabilities and passing range.
Alongside the pursuit of Ederson, United are also ‘close to reaching an agreement’ with Newcastle for Sandro Tonali. However, TEAMtalk reported in April that Tonali would prefer a return to Italy, raising the possibility that his stance may have changed in recent weeks. Tonali joined Newcastle last summer and quickly became an important part of their midfield, contributing both defensively and in attack.
These potential signings would represent a significant upgrade for United’s midfield, providing greater depth and quality as they aim to challenge for Premier League honours and a return to the Champions League. The arrival of two established midfielders could provide a more stable platform for the team’s attacking players.
