Manchester United are nearing the completion of a deal to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson, according to sources at TEAMtalk. The Brazilian international has become a priority target for United this summer, and an agreement between the two clubs is reportedly close to being finalised.
The pursuit of Ederson comes as United plan a significant rebuild of their midfield ahead of the upcoming season. The expected departure of Casemiro, alongside the potential sale of Manuel Ugarte, has accelerated these plans under new permanent head coach Michael Carrick. United had previously been attentive to Ederson’s situation, even when Atletico Madrid were considered favourites for his signature.
Atletico Madrid had engaged in advanced discussions with both Ederson and Atalanta earlier in the summer, but ultimately failed to reach an agreement with the Serie A club. They subsequently turned their attention to Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes, another player who had been monitored by United. This breakdown in negotiations opened the door for United to make a strong push for Ederson.
Personal terms with Ederson were reportedly agreed in principle last week, with senior United sources confirming the midfielder was a player of “significant interest”. Negotiations between the clubs have since progressed rapidly, and a package worth around £38 million is now close to being agreed. The finer details of Ederson’s contract are still being finalised.
Ederson has impressed in Serie A since joining Atalanta in 2022, showcasing athleticism, ball-carrying ability, and tactical versatility. Despite a strong campaign in Italy, he was surprisingly omitted from Brazil’s World Cup squad. United believe his profile aligns well with Carrick’s plans to build a more dynamic and physically dominant midfield.
United are aiming to complete at least four major first-team additions before the start of the new season, with a left-back and a versatile forward also being prioritised. While a central defender has not been ruled out, it is currently considered a less urgent need compared to strengthening the midfield and attack. The expectation is that Ederson will be Carrick’s first marquee signing at Old Trafford, barring any late complications.
