Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, with the transfer activated through a release clause of €41 million (£35m, $46.9m), according to Fabrizio Romano. The move comes as United’s new co-owners, INEOS, have decided to end their pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson Silva.
News of advanced talks between United and Villa regarding Tielemans first emerged on Monday morning, reported by David Ornstein of The Athletic. The Belgium international is reportedly keen on joining United, who will compete in the Champions League next season under manager Michael Carrick.
Tielemans, 29, joins United after a period with Aston Villa where he continued to demonstrate his playmaking abilities. He previously spent time at AS Monaco, establishing himself as a dynamic midfielder in Ligue 1. While his recent form with Villa has been solid, the opportunity to play for a club of United’s stature and compete at the highest level appears to have been a significant draw.
The decision to abandon the pursuit of Ederson came after complications arose during his medical, as reported by Romano. The Brazilian midfielder had undergone the initial part of his medical following Brazil’s elimination from the Copa America, but United have formally confirmed to Atalanta that the deal is off. Atalanta have subsequently offered Ederson a new contract until June 2031.
The acquisition of Tielemans provides United with added depth and quality in midfield, addressing a key area of the squad. With the Ederson deal falling through, United may now reassess their options for further midfield reinforcements, but Tielemans’ arrival provides an immediate solution. The move could allow Carrick to implement a more dynamic and creative approach in midfield next season.
