Man Utd Confirm €40m Signing of Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna
Manchester United have completed the signing of striker Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna in a deal worth €40m plus performance-related add-ons. The Premier League club confirmed the 23-year-old Dutch forward has signed a five-year contract through 2029, with medical tests finalized on Monday.
Zirkzee arrives as United seek to bolster their attacking options following a season where they scored fewer league goals than any other top-eight side. The former Bayern Munich academy product enjoyed a breakout 2023-24 campaign in Serie A, scoring 12 goals and providing 7 assists to help Bologna qualify for the Champions League.
Bologna stand to make significant profit on a player they signed from Bayern for just €8.5m in 2022. The Italian club inserted a 40% sell-on clause during that transaction, though United negotiated to reduce this percentage as part of the current deal according to Sky Sport Italia.
Zirkzee's technical ability and link-up play made him a priority target for manager Erik ten Hag, who values versatile forwards capable of operating as a lone striker. The move reunites the Dutchman with his former youth coach Ruud van Nistelrooy, now part of United's coaching staff.
The transfer marks United's first major signing of the summer window as they aim to close the gap on rivals Manchester City and Arsenal. Zirkzee is expected to compete with Rasmus Højlund for the central striker role, potentially allowing Marcus Rashford to return to his preferred left-wing position.
