Manchester United are exploring the possibility of signing an experienced Premier League striker this summer to provide competition for Benjamin Sesko, according to transfer reporter Ben Jacobs. The club is undergoing significant squad changes as they prepare for a return to the Champions League under manager Michael Carrick.
While a midfielder, such as Mateus Fernandes, remains a priority, United are also assessing options in attack. Jacobs suggested that Danny Welbeck, Ivan Toney, and Igor Thiago are among the players being considered, with the club potentially favouring a player who can offer a positive influence in the dressing room and provide reliability during a lengthy season.
A return for Welbeck, currently at Brighton & Hove Albion, has been discussed, with Jacobs noting the potential positive reception from the fanbase. However, he also indicated that Brighton may be reluctant to sell the forward. Toney, currently playing in Saudi Arabia, is another name on United’s radar, but his high wage demands present a potential obstacle, with reports suggesting he is content in his current situation despite speculation linking him with a move away.
Thiago, who has enjoyed a productive season, is also of interest to United, though no concrete progress has been made on a potential deal at this stage. The club are currently finalising the signing of Ederson from Atalanta, who will join once his World Cup commitments are complete, and are also pursuing further midfield reinforcements, with Felix Nmecha of Borussia Dortmund a recent target.
United’s focus will then likely shift to strengthening their left wing and left-back positions before potentially revisiting the striker position. Jacobs stated that the club’s approach has shifted from targeting younger players with potential, like Sesko, to seeking a more proven Premier League performer who can contribute immediately as a squad player. This change in strategy reflects the need for experience and depth as United navigate a demanding season.
