Manchester United and Newcastle United have both initiated discussions with representatives of Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Hugo Larsson, according to sources at FootballTransfers. The 22-year-old Sweden international is reportedly open to a move away from the Bundesliga club, prompting interest from both Premier League sides.
Neither club has submitted an official bid for Larsson, who joined Frankfurt from Malmo in 2023 for a fee of €9 million. He has since established himself as a key player in midfield for the German side, though his recent form has been subject to scrutiny. Bundesliga expert Tom Weber told FootballTransfers that while Larsson is planning to take the next step in his career, Frankfurt may struggle to achieve their desired fee, suggesting the player hasn’t fully justified his current valuation.
Manchester United have already strengthened their midfield this summer with the signings of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, but manager Michael Carrick is believed to be seeking a further addition. While the club may be targeting a more established “marquee” signing, Larsson presents a promising option for the future. Newcastle’s interest is similarly motivated by potential midfield changes, as they anticipate a possible departure of Bruno Guimaraes, who is a target for Arsenal.
Should Guimaraes leave, Eddie Howe’s side view Larsson as a viable replacement, citing his energy, athleticism, and dynamic playing style. Newcastle have previously missed out on transfer targets, including Johan Manzambi, who is expected to join Aston Villa, and are determined to avoid a similar outcome with Larsson. Frankfurt are holding firm on a €50 million valuation for the player, significantly higher than his current Estimated Transfer Value of €27.6 million, given he is under contract until 2029.
Weber highlighted that Larsson thrives when partnered with a more defensively focused midfielder, a dynamic that was previously present with Ellyes Skhiri, but has been lacking this past season due to Skhiri’s diminished form. Despite recent challenges, Larsson’s potential makes him a worthwhile gamble for interested clubs. His acquisition would provide either United or Newcastle with a promising young talent capable of contributing to their long-term ambitions.
