Manchester United have agreed to a one-year contract extension with goalkeeper Tom Heaton, covering the 2026/27 campaign, according to Fabrizio Romano. The deal has been described as ‘genius’ by The Sun due to its importance in meeting UEFA’s homegrown player requirements ahead of the club’s return to the Champions League next season.
Heaton, 38, has been a long-serving member of the United squad, though he hasn’t featured in a competitive match for the Red Devils in over three years. Despite limited playing time, he is highly valued within the team, with Casemiro recently highlighting his positive influence in training. He initially rose through United’s academy in the early 2000s.
Beyond the goalkeeping situation, Manchester United are actively pursuing midfield reinforcements. Reports from Spain suggest that Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga could be available for around £50 million, as incoming manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly not planning to reintegrate the 23-year-old into his first-team plans. Camavinga himself is reportedly reluctant to leave the Spanish capital, but his recent form has been a concern.
United are also accelerating talks with West Ham United for Mateus Fernandes, as reported by the Daily Mail. West Ham are anticipating potential player sales to balance their finances should they be relegated from the Premier League, with The Guardian reporting a need to generate around £100 million. Fernandes, 21, has been a standout performer for the Hammers, attracting interest from both United and Arsenal, though United are currently leading the chase. West Ham currently value the Portugal international at £80 million, a significant increase from the £40 million they paid Southampton for him just a year ago.
The potential sale of Fernandes would be impacted by West Ham’s league status, with relegation likely reducing their ability to command their asking price. United are aiming to sign two central midfielders during the summer transfer window as they look to strengthen their squad under new ownership.
