Manchester United are planning a significant overhaul of their squad following a successful return to the Champions League under manager Michael Carrick, with CEO Omar Berrada outlining a clear strategy of targeting players with Premier League experience or proven quality outside the league. The club aims for a blend of agility and long-term planning in the transfer market.
Central to United’s ambitions is the pursuit of Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, though the club acknowledges potential competition, particularly from Manchester City. Alternative midfield targets include West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali, and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, should a move for Anderson prove unsuccessful. A deal for Atalanta’s Ederson is reportedly close to completion, representing a more affordable option to bolster the midfield.
Beyond midfield, United are also exploring options at full-back, with Newcastle’s Lewis Hall identified as a key target due to his Premier League experience and suitability to Berrada’s outlined criteria. Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Ryerson is considered as an alternative, offering versatility and attacking potential. The defensive positions appear relatively secure with young talents Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven alongside veteran Harry Maguire.
Upfront, the club is seeking a versatile attacker, with AC Milan’s Rafael Leao emerging as a potential target with a reported €50 million price tag. Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye is also under consideration, though he may not possess the same level of potential as the Portuguese winger.
To facilitate these arrivals, United are prepared to offload several players. Rasmus Hojlund has already departed for Napoli in a €44 million deal, while Jadon Sancho will be released at the end of his contract. Marcus Rashford’s future is uncertain, with Barcelona among potential destinations. Goalkeeper Andre Onana, currently on loan at Trabzonspor, is also expected to be sold. Other departures include Tyrell Malacia, Casemiro, and Manuel Ugarte, all of whom have failed to establish themselves at Old Trafford. The future of Joshua Zirkzee remains in doubt, though the club may retain him as a squad option.
These moves aim to provide Carrick with greater squad depth and quality as United prepare for a demanding season balancing domestic and European commitments.
