Manchester United have made initial enquiries regarding the availability of Nottingham Forest full-back Neco Williams, according to a report from the BBC’s Sami Mokbel. The club, under the direction of incoming football operations figure Michael Carrick, are assessing options to strengthen the left-back position during the summer transfer window.
Williams, 25, has become a key player for Forest since joining from Liverpool in 2022 for a reported £17 million. Initially a right-back during his time at Anfield, he has primarily featured on the left side for Forest, even captaining the side on occasion. His versatility and consistent performances have drawn attention from several Premier League clubs.
Newcastle, Aston Villa, and Everton are also reportedly interested in Williams, but Forest are keen to retain the Welsh international. The club have begun discussions with Williams over a new and improved contract, hoping to ward off potential suitors. Williams signed a three-year deal upon joining Forest last summer, and a new contract would further solidify his future at the City Ground.
The interest from Manchester United stems from a desire to provide competition for, and potentially replace, Luke Shaw. While Shaw remains a key player, United are looking to add depth and quality in that position as part of a broader squad overhaul. Carrick is expected to be heavily involved in identifying targets, and a move for Williams aligns with the club’s focus on bringing in established Premier League players.
Williams progressed through the Liverpool academy but struggled for consistent first-team opportunities due to the presence of Trent Alexander-Arnold. His move to Forest has allowed him to establish himself as a regular starter and demonstrate his capabilities. Should Forest successfully agree a new contract with Williams, it would likely end United’s pursuit, but the player’s situation remains one to watch as the transfer window approaches. A successful acquisition of Williams would provide United with a dynamic and experienced full-back capable of contributing both defensively and in attack.
