Manchester United are identifying potential reinforcements at left-back, with West Ham United’s El Hadji Malick Diouf emerging as a target, according to Football Insider. The club views the Senegal international as possessing the ‘ideal profile’ for the position, particularly given Luke Shaw’s age and recent injury concerns.
United are enjoying a strong season under Michael Carrick, currently sitting third in the Premier League and having secured Champions League qualification for next season. While strengthening the midfield is a priority, the left-back area is also under consideration, with Shaw turning 30 and having a history of fitness issues.
Diouf joined West Ham ahead of the current campaign following an impressive spell with Slavia Prague, and has quickly established himself as a key player. He has contributed five assists in his debut season with the Hammers, including notable contributions against Chelsea and Liverpool. His versatility has also been on display, featuring in both centre-back and left-back roles across 35 league games.
West Ham’s precarious position in the Premier League – currently one point from safety – could force the club to sell key assets should they be relegated to the Championship. Diouf, at 21 years old, would likely be among the first players to depart, making a move to a club like Manchester United a realistic possibility.
United reportedly see Diouf as offering a more attacking dimension than Shaw, who is known for his defensive solidity. Shaw’s most productive assist season in the Premier League came in 2020/21, with five assists, a record Diouf has already matched this season. The potential for both players to complement each other, offering different skillsets depending on the opponent, is appealing to the United coaching staff. A move for Diouf could provide long-term competition and cover in a crucial position.
