Manchester United will likely have to meet West Ham United’s £80 million valuation to secure the transfer of midfielder Mateus Fernandes this summer. The Portugal international joined West Ham from Southampton last year for around £40 million, but the club are now seeking to double their investment despite their recent relegation to the Championship.
United have identified Fernandes as a potential target in their pursuit of midfield reinforcements, with the club potentially seeking up to three new players in that position this summer. However, according to BBC reporter Simon Stone, West Ham are taking a firm stance in negotiations and are under no pressure to sell, insisting they will stand by their £80 million asking price.
Despite West Ham’s relegation, their financial situation necessitates player sales, with a target of raising £100 million to offset revenue losses. Fernandes is among a group of players expected to be available, but the club are determined to avoid selling their key assets for less than their perceived worth.
United currently value Fernandes closer to £50 million, hoping West Ham’s weakened position following relegation would encourage a lower fee. They have already agreed a deal to sign Ederson from Atalanta, but Fernandes remains a priority target. Competition for Fernandes’ signature is mounting, with Liverpool, Arsenal, and Paris Saint-Germain all expressing interest. Sources indicate that Fernandes is open to a move to PSG, while Arsenal have already made contact regarding a potential offer. However, it is believed that Fernandes himself prefers a move to Old Trafford, reportedly admiring a particular player at the club.
Liverpool are now also monitoring the situation closely, and could pose a significant threat to United’s pursuit. The increased competition could ultimately drive up the price, potentially forcing United to reconsider their initial valuation.
