Manchester United are currently leading the race to sign West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, ahead of interest from Arsenal, Manchester City, and Chelsea, according to reports. The development comes as West Ham face a significant risk of relegation from the Premier League, potentially impacting the player’s valuation.
Fernandes joined West Ham last August for a reported £42 million after a standout season with Southampton, despite their eventual relegation. The 21-year-old has made 41 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring five goals and providing four assists. He is described as an all-action midfielder, strong in duels, possessing excellent close control, and capable of creating goal-scoring opportunities.
United’s pursuit is reportedly being bolstered by the presence of Kyle Macaulay, the club’s head of scouting, who previously worked at West Ham as their recruitment chief and was instrumental in bringing Fernandes to the London Stadium last summer. Journalist Jacob Steinberg, speaking on the United! United! United! podcast, highlighted Macaulay’s connection as a key factor, alongside United’s existing links through Jason Wilcox, who previously worked at Southampton.
Should West Ham be relegated, Fernandes’ price is expected to fall ‘dramatically’ from an estimated £80 million. A fee in the region of £40-50 million could prove to be an attractive proposition for United, who are also reportedly pursuing Atalanta’s Ederson. Former Southampton midfielder Jo Tessem has previously lauded Fernandes as an ‘ultimate Premier League midfielder’.
The potential signing of Fernandes aligns with United’s need to inject energy and dynamism into their midfield. With Elliot Anderson potentially heading to Manchester City, United are actively seeking midfield reinforcements, and securing Fernandes would represent a significant addition to Michael Carrick’s squad.
