Manchester United are actively pursuing options to strengthen their left-back position this summer, with talks underway with Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall, as well as Eintracht Frankfurt’s Nathaniel Brown and Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde, according to TEAMtalk. The club’s recruitment team has prioritised finding a young, internationally-capable player to provide competition and long-term cover for Luke Shaw.
The pursuit of Hall, 21, remains the primary focus, with United believing they can still tempt him away from St James’ Park despite Newcastle’s reluctance to sell. Hall experienced a setback this summer by missing out on England’s World Cup squad, and sources suggest he may be open to considering his future if a suitable opportunity arises, though Newcastle have reportedly placed a £60 million-plus valuation on the player. Michael Carrick, the club’s technical director, is supportive of the move.
Alongside Hall, United are also exploring alternatives, with Christopher Vivell, the head of recruitment, advocating for both Brown and Balde. Both players, aged 22, fit the profile of young, developing full-backs that the club is seeking. Brown’s performances for Eintracht Frankfurt have significantly increased his stock, and he is currently Germany’s first-choice left-back, attracting interest from several top European clubs, including Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich.
Bayern Munich have already held discussions with both Brown and Frankfurt, but Frankfurt’s £55 million valuation is proving a sticking point, with concerns that Premier League clubs could escalate the price. United have made contact with Brown and his representatives, and while Bayern have agreed personal terms, the deal is not yet complete.
Barcelona are reportedly ‘open’ to selling Balde as they look to reshape their squad and generate funds. United have been monitoring Balde’s situation and remain interested, with the Spanish international fitting the criteria set by Jason Wilcox, the club’s sporting director. While Hall is considered the first choice, United are proactively pursuing multiple options to ensure they strengthen the left side of their defence this summer, alongside exploring potential attacking additions like Iliman Ndiaye and Bazoumana Toure.
