Man Utd Linked with €100m Move for Barcelona's Fermin Lopez
Manchester United are reportedly considering a €100m (£86.5m) bid for Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez this summer, according to Football Espana. The 20-year-old academy graduate has become a key figure for the Catalan club this season, contributing 12 goals and 16 assists in 39 appearances across all competitions.
Lopez's breakthrough campaign has seen him help Barcelona win the Spanish Super Cup, maintain a four-point lead at the top of La Liga, and reach the Champions League quarter-finals. His recent goal and assist in Barcelona's 7-2 demolition of Newcastle United in Europe highlighted his growing influence under manager Hansi Flick, who praised the Spaniard's "dynamic" playing style earlier this season.
Despite United's apparent interest, the report stresses that both Lopez and Barcelona currently oppose a transfer. The club's sporting director Deco is understood to prioritize selling other assets including Jules Kounde, Alejandro Balde, and Dani Olmo to fund summer recruitment. Lopez is viewed as integral to Barcelona's long-term plans despite their financial constraints.
United's pursuit aligns with their search for creative midfield reinforcements, with Lopez potentially seen as a future successor to Bruno Fernandes. However, sources suggest the Premier League club are more likely to target defensive-minded options such as Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton or Brighton's Carlos Baleba. The report also notes ongoing discussions between United and Barcelona regarding Marcus Rashford's potential permanent move to Camp Nou after his loan spell.
Lopez signed a contract extension with Barcelona in March 2024 that runs until 2027, with a €400m release clause. While United's interest appears speculative at this stage, the situation underscores the ongoing challenges Barcelona face in balancing their squad needs with financial realities.
