Manchester United are considering including forward Marcus Rashford in a potential swap deal for Roma midfielder Kouadio Manu Kone, according to reports in Italy. The Red Devils have been actively pursuing Kone throughout the summer transfer window, but have so far been reluctant to meet Roma’s £51million (€60m) asking price.
United have already secured the signings of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans for a combined £85million as manager Michael Carrick looks to rebuild the midfield following the departure of Casemiro and a season-ending ACL injury to Manuel Ugarte. However, Carrick is reportedly keen to add a third midfielder to the squad to cope with the demands of both domestic and European competition.
Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport claims that Roma would be open to a deal that sees Rashford move to the Stadio Olimpico as a ‘suitable makeweight’ to facilitate Kone’s transfer to Old Trafford. Roma are looking to generate funds through player sales to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations, and Rashford’s inclusion could help bridge the valuation gap between the two clubs.
Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli have also expressed interest in Kone, but have similarly balked at Roma’s asking price. Rashford, who spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Barcelona, has two years remaining on his current contract at Manchester United, though a clause allowing him to leave for £40million – excluding moves to Liverpool or Manchester City – has now expired.
Despite not featuring for the club since December 2024, Carrick has indicated he would be willing to work with Rashford should he remain at Old Trafford, stating, “Whoever’s here, I want to work with, and help them improve.” However, the club are reportedly eager to reduce their wage bill, and a swap deal could offer a solution. The financial implications of a loan deal, which would likely require United to cover a significant portion of Rashford’s salary, could also be a factor in their willingness to explore a swap.
