Manchester United are anticipating a medical for Atalanta midfielder Ederson Silva on Sunday, according to reports from Italy, as Michael Carrick prepares to finalize his first signing as the club’s permanent manager. The 26-year-old’s arrival has been slightly delayed due to a late call-up to the Brazil squad for the World Cup following an injury to Roma’s Wesley, but a medical in New York has now been scheduled.
The deal for Ederson is reportedly worth €45 million to Atalanta, with a further €4 million potentially payable in performance-related add-ons. Corriere Dello Sport reported on Saturday that the formalities are now close to completion, having beaten competition from Atletico Madrid for the player’s signature.
Ederson has established himself as a key player for Atalanta in Serie A, known for his dynamic midfield play and ability to contribute both defensively and offensively. He has been a regular starter for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side, and his arrival at Old Trafford would add much-needed depth and quality to United’s midfield options.
Alongside the imminent arrival of Ederson, Manchester United are also maintaining active contact with Newcastle United regarding left-back Lewis Hall. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano stated that United have “kept the contacts alive and active” with those close to the player, indicating a genuine interest in bolstering their left-sided defensive options. Romano also noted that while midfield reinforcements remain a priority – with Ederson’s transfer nearing completion and potentially one or two further additions – a left-back is also a position the club are keen to address.
Securing both Ederson and Hall would represent a productive start to the transfer window for Carrick, addressing key areas of the squad and providing competition for places. The addition of a dynamic midfielder in Ederson and a versatile left-back in Hall would give United greater tactical flexibility as they look to improve their performance next season.
