Manchester United could make a move for Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo this summer, but only if the player submits a transfer request, according to transfer reporter Ben Jacobs. The potential interest marks a surprising development given the historic rivalry between the two clubs, with very little transfer business conducted between them in recent decades.
United previously considered Gakpo before his move to Merseyside in January 2023, during Erik ten Hag’s tenure as manager. Liverpool ultimately secured the deal, bringing Gakpo to Anfield from PSV Eindhoven for a reported €42 million. Since then, the 27-year-old has become a regular fixture in Liverpool’s squad, featuring in all but two Premier League matches last season under Arne Slot.
However, recent reports suggest Gakpo may be unsettled following Slot’s appointment, leading to speculation about his future. Tottenham Hotspur have also been mentioned as potential suitors, but Jacobs suggests United’s interest would intensify significantly if Gakpo actively seeks a departure from Liverpool. “He has always been somewhat appreciated, but we know that Man United and Liverpool just don't really do business,” Jacobs told The United Stand. “If Gakpo specifically asks to leave Liverpool, then let's see where the Premier League clubs come forward.”
No player has been directly transferred between Liverpool and Manchester United since 1964, making any deal a break from tradition. Liverpool are reportedly calm about the situation, with denials emerging from sources close to the club that Gakpo has indicated a desire to leave. Should Liverpool decide to cash in on Gakpo, Jacobs claims they would seek a fee in the region of €80 million, citing Anthony Gordon’s recent move from Newcastle to Barcelona as a benchmark. United are known to be in the market for a player with Gakpo’s profile this summer, adding further weight to the possibility of a move should the circumstances align.
