Manchester United are closely monitoring Mateus Fernandes of West Ham United as a potential replacement for Casemiro this summer, following a standout performance against Arsenal on Sunday.
The Portugal international shone in West Ham’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at the London Stadium, despite a controversial VAR decision denying the Hammers a late equaliser. While Fernandes missed a clear scoring opportunity, his overall midfield display impressed United officials who were in attendance.
Fernandes joined West Ham from Southampton last August for a fee of €44 million and has quickly established himself as one of the Premier League’s most consistent central midfielders. His form has been so impressive that a potential relegation for West Ham would almost certainly see him move to a club competing at a higher level.
United are considering several midfield options, including Aurelien Tchouameni, Carlos Baleba, and Adam Wharton, with Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest currently their primary target. However, Forest’s valuation of Anderson, exceeding €120 million, presents a significant obstacle. Fernandes is expected to be considerably cheaper, making him an attractive alternative.
Against Arsenal, Fernandes excelled in a midfield battle against Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Eberechi Eze, winning seven of his 11 ground duels, making four recoveries, and completing seven carries. He embodied West Ham’s energetic performance, dictating play in the Arsenal half.
United are prioritising finding a suitable replacement for Casemiro, who is expected to leave the club in the coming months, and Fernandes’ performance suggests he possesses the qualities needed to partner with Kobbie Mainoo in midfield. His energetic style and ability to control the tempo of a match align with the qualities United are seeking in a new midfielder.
Securing a quality replacement for Casemiro is crucial for United’s long-term success, and Fernandes is emerging as a strong contender for the role.
