Manchester United are poised to receive a financial boost should Ruben Amorim be appointed as the new manager of AC Milan, according to reports in The Telegraph. Amorim was sacked by United in January after a challenging 14-month spell in charge, subsequently replaced by Michael Carrick who oversaw a significant improvement in form, leading the club to a third-place finish in the Premier League.
United previously revealed in February that dismissing Amorim and his coaching staff – Carlos Fernandes, Adelio Candido, Emanuel Ferro, and Jorge Vital – could incur a compensation fee of €18.4million (£15.9m). However, this figure is now expected to decrease if Amorim takes the helm at Milan, who are searching for a replacement for Massimiliano Allegri.
Milan dismissed Allegri following a disappointing end to the season, resulting in a fifth-place finish in Serie A and missing out on Champions League qualification by a single point. The Italian club have also been linked with other managerial candidates, including Oliver Glasner, recently departed from Crystal Palace, and Al-Ahli’s Matthias Jaissle, as reported by transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano. Initial interest in Andoni Iraola was also reported before he accepted the position at Liverpool.
Any savings made on the compensation package for Amorim could be redirected by United towards strengthening their midfield, a stated priority for the club. The Times reported on Friday that United are leading the race to sign Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United for a fee of €92m (£80m), with the Hammers needing to generate funds following their relegation to the Championship.
United have also agreed a deal to bring Ederson from Atalanta for €40.5m (£35m), though the transfer is currently delayed due to the midfielder’s inclusion in the Brazil squad for the World Cup. Interest in Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson has cooled, with BBC Sport reporting that United are unwilling to match Manchester City’s valuation of the player, which reached up to €139m (£120m) for a second bid. Reports suggest Anderson prefers a move to City, who are in advanced talks with Chelsea to appoint Enzo Maresca as their new manager, succeeding Pep Guardiola.
