Manchester United are actively pursuing deals for Atalanta midfielder Ederson and West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, with a combined potential cost of £132 million, according to reports. The club is also on the verge of formally appointing Michael Carrick as their new permanent manager.
The Red Devils are preparing for an ambitious summer transfer window, bolstered by their qualification for the Champions League. Strengthening the midfield is a stated priority, and United are reportedly encouraged by the prospect of securing both Ederson and Fernandes.
Ederson, a 26-year-old Brazilian international, has been a standout performer in Serie A for Atalanta. While Atletico Madrid had previously reached an agreement in principle with the player on personal terms, negotiations over a transfer fee stalled, creating an opportunity for United. Sources indicate United have already reached a broad agreement with Ederson on personal terms, and are now ‘sprinting’ towards completing the signing. Atalanta are reportedly seeking an initial €45 million (£39 million) with potential add-ons taking the deal to €60 million (£52 million).
Alongside Ederson, United are also heavily interested in 21-year-old Mateus Fernandes, who joined West Ham from Southampton last summer. Despite West Ham’s struggles in the Premier League, Fernandes has impressed, and United view him as a potential long-term solution in midfield, with some suggesting he could eventually succeed Bruno Fernandes. The Portugal international is reportedly keen to play alongside his compatriot, and United have already contacted his representatives. West Ham currently value Fernandes at a minimum of £80 million, though that figure could decrease if they are relegated.
Separately, discussions regarding Michael Carrick’s permanent appointment as manager have accelerated significantly. While other candidates including Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino were considered, Carrick has emerged as the preferred choice due to positive feedback from across multiple departments within the club. United are hopeful of finalizing the agreement before their final game of the season against Brighton, allowing Carrick to begin planning for the summer transfer window.
