Manchester United have renewed their interest in Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, despite reports the player has agreed to a contract extension with the Spanish club. According to reports from Samuel Luckhurst of The Sun and journalist Andy Mitten, a move to Old Trafford remains possible.
INEOS’s arrival at United has prioritized central midfield reinforcements this summer, with Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa already secured for a combined £85 million. The club had previously agreed a £38 million deal with Atalanta for Ederson, but the midfielder failed his medical, prompting the search for further options. Karl Darlow and Tynan Thompson have also joined the club, the latter to bolster their youth ranks.
Tchouameni has been identified as a potential long-term replacement for Casemiro in the No 6 role. While ESPN reported on July 8th that the French international had agreed new terms with Real Madrid, no formal announcement has been made, leaving a window of opportunity for United. Luckhurst reports that United are not discouraged by these reports, citing Tchouameni’s age – fitting their preferred profile of 22-26 – and the potential for a lower fee than some Premier League alternatives.
Mitten revealed that sources within Real Madrid have indicated they could still be open to selling Tchouameni, despite the apparent agreement of a new contract. He stated that a contact within the club told him, “They could still sell him,” suggesting Madrid may be willing to consider offers. Mitten also noted that Tchouameni would be receptive to a move to United if his situation in Madrid were to change, having been happy with the terms offered by the Spanish club.
Tchouameni is believed to be available for around £70 million, a figure lower than recent fees paid for players like Alex Scott and Elliot Anderson. This could make him an attractive option for United, who have demonstrated a willingness to spend significantly on midfield reinforcements this summer. The pursuit of Roma’s Manu Kone is also ongoing, but Tchouameni remains a priority target.
