Manchester United have withdrawn from the pursuit of Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, unwilling to compete with Manchester City’s escalating bids, according to reports from Fabrizio Romano and Ben Jacobs. City have already had a bid of £121 million, including a £106 million guaranteed fee, rejected by Forest.
Despite viewing Anderson as a “dream target”, the United co-ownership group, INEOS, have determined the potential cost is too high. This decision comes after already securing a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson Silva, and the club is now focusing on alternative midfield options such as Matheus Fernandes, Alex Scott, and Carlos Baleba.
Anderson, 21, has emerged as a key player for Nottingham Forest since joining from Newcastle United in 2022. He has become a regular starter, contributing goals and assists from midfield, and his performances have attracted attention from top clubs. Forest are reportedly holding out for a British transfer record fee for the player.
Manchester City remain strongly interested in Anderson, with sources indicating the player has already agreed personal terms with the club. City initially attempted a bid before the World Cup, anticipating a price increase based on his performance in the tournament. While their second bid was rejected, they are prepared to continue negotiations. The situation suggests a move to the Etihad Stadium is increasingly likely, as United prioritize other targets and avoid a costly bidding war. The increased competition for midfield positions at both clubs highlights the importance of strengthening in that area ahead of the new season.
