Manchester United have altered their midfield transfer strategy, turning their attention to Roma’s Manu Kone after encountering complications in their pursuit of Atalanta’s Ederson Silva. According to reports from Fabrizio Romano, Matteo Moretto, and Gianluca Di Marzio, United have informed Atalanta that the Ederson deal is currently on hold, citing concerns arising from the player’s second medical examination in England.
The issue reportedly centers around a pre-existing knee problem, though Atalanta maintain that the 27-year-old is fully fit and available, having featured for Brazil at the recent World Cup. Despite United briefing that the deal isn’t entirely collapsed, significant delays have emerged. Meanwhile, Newcastle United are positioned to potentially capitalize on the situation, with SportMediaSet reporting the Magpies are preparing a bid to bring Ederson to St. James’ Park, likely mirroring the previously agreed €45 million package – €40.5 million plus €4.5 million in add-ons – offered by United.
United’s change in direction has led them to Kone, the 25-year-old French midfielder currently with Roma. Ben Jacobs has indicated that initial enquiries have been made regarding Kone’s availability, and SportMediaSet now claim United are “heavily focusing” on securing his signature with a potential offer of €50 million (£42.5m) ready to be submitted. Further reports from Corriere dello Sport suggest Roma will likely demand a higher fee, potentially around €55 million (£47m), to sanction a sale.
Kone enjoyed a prominent role at the World Cup, starting four of France’s six matches and providing a solid foundation in midfield. He has established himself as a key player for Roma, and his acquisition would represent a significant addition to United’s midfield options. The pursuit of Kone comes after United secured a deal for Chelsea’s Andrey Santos, and represents a continued effort to bolster their central midfield ahead of the new season. Securing Kone would provide further competition and depth in a crucial area of the pitch, potentially setting the stage for a strong campaign.
