Manchester United are monitoring Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, with a potential transfer fee of around £90 million being discussed, according to reports from Alan Shearer. The Red Devils are aiming to strengthen their midfield options this summer following the departure of Casemiro and with Manuel Ugarte potentially being sold.
United are expected to add at least two, and potentially three, new midfielders to cope with the demands of Champions League football next season. While Atalanta’s Ederson is close to becoming Michael Carrick’s first signing, the club are also seeking players with Premier League experience, initially targeting Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson. However, with competition from Manchester City for Anderson, Tonali has emerged as a viable alternative.
Shearer suggested that Tonali’s departure from Newcastle hinges on the player expressing a desire to leave and whether United miss out on Anderson. He noted that, similar to the Anthony Gordon situation, Newcastle would be willing to sell if the price is right. Shearer believes Tonali has a strong connection with Bruno Guimarães in midfield and would prefer him to stay, but acknowledges a significant offer could benefit both the club and the player.
Newcastle reportedly protected Tonali during recent off-field issues, and a sale could be mutually beneficial. Shearer indicated that a fee in the region of £90 million would likely be considered acceptable, especially given recent transfer values for players like Anthony Gordon and potentially Elliot Anderson. Tonali’s agent previously attempted to move him to Arsenal in January, though those efforts were unsuccessful.
Recent reports from Italy suggest Manchester United are preparing a substantial bid for Tonali, though the player’s preference reportedly remains a return to Serie A. However, the financial demands may prove prohibitive for Italian clubs like Juventus and Inter Milan. United are anticipating a busy summer transfer window, with journalist Ben Jacobs claiming up to seven or eight new players could arrive at Old Trafford.
