Manchester United have expressed interest in Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong, with the 20-year-old potentially seeking assurances of regular playing time under incoming manager Xabi Alonso, according to reports from Ben Jacobs of The United Stand.
Acheampong has long been considered a promising talent within Chelsea’s academy, showcasing versatility in defence. Despite this potential, the youngster has struggled for consistent minutes with the first team, playing only 1,290 minutes of senior football this season. A period between November and December saw him make no Premier League appearances, and prior to a recent start against Tottenham, he had featured for just 13 minutes in the previous ten top-flight matches.
The situation has led Acheampong to consider his options, particularly with the arrival of Alonso. While the new manager could offer a pathway to increased involvement, he may also not feature in Alonso’s plans. Jacobs reports that Chelsea currently consider Acheampong “untouchable,” but this stance could shift if the player requests a transfer.
“Murillo has been discussed in the past,” Jacobs told The United Stand. “A more right-sided option, Josh Acheampong, who Chelsea have always said, ‘he is just not for sale. Period.’ And I am led to believe that’s a genuine stance. But Acheampong…is going to have to understand, heading into the new season under a new manager, how often is he going to play?”
Chelsea are expected to sign another centre-back this summer, potentially further limiting Acheampong’s opportunities. The possibility of Alonso implementing a back-three formation could offer more chances, but this remains uncertain. Manchester City are also reportedly monitoring Acheampong’s situation. The player is said to be open to exploring alternatives if he anticipates a continued lack of game time.
Acheampong’s potential departure could become a key storyline in the upcoming transfer window, as he seeks a club where he can secure regular first-team football and continue his development.
