Manchester United have identified Brentford striker Igor Thiago as a potential transfer target this summer, though a deal is contingent on player sales and would command a significant fee. The news comes as United prepare for a substantial squad overhaul backed by new co-owners INEOS, with around £200 million earmarked for new signings.
United are looking to strengthen multiple positions, including central midfield, left-back, and centre-forward, despite recently investing £73 million in Benjamin Sesko. The pursuit of Thiago, 24, represents a shift towards considering more experienced options upfront, though the club initially planned to seek a forward to directly support Sesko.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, United director of football Jason Wilcox views Thiago as a worthwhile investment. The Brazilian forward finished the most recent Premier League season as the second-highest scorer with 22 goals in 38 appearances. He has scored a total of 90 goals across his senior career for club and country.
The potential deal is linked to the possible departure of Joshua Zirkzee, with a return to Serie A reportedly being considered. United hope to use any funds generated from a Zirkzee sale to finance a move for Thiago. Brentford are expected to demand a fee of around £70 million for the player, who signed a new long-term contract with the club earlier this year.
Thiago has also attracted interest from Chelsea, and his recent performances, including two goals in three appearances against United, have heightened his profile. He has earned three caps for Brazil and was part of Carlo Ancelotti’s World Cup squad. A successful World Cup showing is expected to further increase his market value and appeal to top clubs.
