Manchester United are reportedly intensifying their pursuit of Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone following the confirmation of Andre Onana’s season-long loan return to Trabzonspor, according to The Sun. The move comes as United seek an experienced backup option, with Altay Bayindir also expected to depart the club.
Johnstone, 33, progressed through Manchester United’s academy system, spending seven years with the first team without making a competitive appearance. He has since established himself as a reliable Premier League goalkeeper with spells at West Bromwich Albion, Crystal Palace, and most recently, Wolves. His return would also contribute to meeting the club’s homegrown player quota.
The need for goalkeeping reinforcements arose after Onana’s loan move and the anticipated exit of Bayindir. Senne Lammens’ successful debut season at Old Trafford has alleviated the pressure to sign a high-profile replacement, allowing the club to focus on securing a dependable understudy. United had previously considered Karl Darlow, whose contract with Leeds United recently expired, but are now prioritizing Johnstone.
Johnstone’s current contract with Wolves has two years remaining, potentially complicating negotiations. Wolves were relegated to the Championship at the end of the previous season, which may influence Johnstone’s willingness to remain at Molineux. United’s interest represents a chance for Johnstone to return to the club where his professional journey began and compete at the highest level.
The potential signing of Johnstone is part of a broader reshaping of Manchester United’s squad under new ownership, with the club also actively pursuing central midfield targets such as Aurelien Tchouameni of Real Madrid and Alex Scott of Bournemouth. The club recently announced Onana’s loan, signifying a shift in the goalkeeping department as they prepare for the upcoming season.
