Manchester United are poised to receive a significant transfer windfall as Mason Greenwood edges closer to a move from Marseille to Roma for a fee of €50 million. The Ligue 1 club signed Greenwood from United in the summer of 2024 following the dropping of serious charges against him in February 2023, for an initial €26 million.
United retained a sell-on clause in that deal, reportedly between 40-50% of any future transfer fee, and are now set to profit from Roma’s strong interest in the forward. Italian transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio reports that the Serie A side view Greenwood as their ‘first choice’ attacking target this summer, though no formal contact with Marseille has yet been made.
Greenwood has enjoyed a productive season with Marseille, scoring 26 goals and providing 11 assists in Ligue 1. His Estimated Transfer Value currently stands at €49.9 million, aligning with Marseille’s asking price. However, the French club’s financial situation is precarious, with significant debts and the threat of a UEFA ban if they fail to improve their financial standing, potentially weakening their negotiating position.
The exact amount United will receive remains uncertain, with differing reports on the percentage of the sell-on clause and whether it applies to the entire fee or just Marseille’s profit. In a best-case scenario, a €50 million deal could yield United €25 million, while a more conservative estimate places the figure around €9.6 million. Despite the uncertainty, either outcome represents a valuable addition to the club’s transfer budget.
Greenwood’s time at Marseille is expected to end on a sour note, with criticism directed at his attitude and performances in the latter part of the season. He has faced scrutiny from both the media and supporters, even being dropped from the starting lineup by head coach Habib Beye. A particularly scathing review in La Provence awarded him a 0/10 rating following a defeat to Nantes, criticizing his lack of effort and unprofessional conduct. Despite finishing as Marseille’s top scorer, his departure is unlikely to be mourned by the club’s fanbase.
