Manchester United have expressed strong interest in Kodai Sano, the 22-year-old midfielder currently playing for NEC Nijmegen, according to TEAMtalk. Recruitment staff at the club have identified Sano as a player with “huge potential” as they assess options for strengthening their midfield.
The Japanese international has been a standout performer in the Eredivisie this season, contributing to ten goals for NEC Nijmegen and playing a key role in their push for a Champions League qualification spot. Sano joined the Dutch club last summer from Fagiano Okayama and has quickly adapted to European football.
Sano primarily operates as an attacking central midfielder but demonstrates versatility by being able to play across the midfield. His performances have already attracted attention from several Premier League clubs, including Crystal Palace, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Nottingham Forest, who were all reportedly interested in January. These clubs are potentially seeking replacements for midfielders like Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba, and Elliot Anderson.
However, United are not alone in their pursuit of the player. Chelsea’s ownership group, BlueCo, and City Football Group, which includes Manchester City, are also monitoring Sano’s progress. Interest extends beyond the Premier League, with Ajax, Feyenoord, and several Bundesliga clubs – RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund, and Schalke – also tracking the midfielder. Spanish sides Real Sociedad and Real Betis, as well as French clubs Monaco and Lyon, are also reportedly considering a move.
Manchester United’s interest comes as they potentially prepare for changes in their midfield, with Casemiro’s future uncertain and the possibility of further departures, including Manuel Ugarte. Jason Wilcox, United’s new director of football, is believed to be driving the club’s interest in Sano, seeking a “masterclass signing” to bolster the squad.
