Manchester United have been encouraged to pursue Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha as a potential alternative to West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, according to reports. United legend Gary Neville believes Nmecha is an ‘outstanding’ player and a viable option should West Ham maintain a high asking price for Fernandes.
The 25-year-old Nmecha has spent the last three seasons with Dortmund, impressing in the Bundesliga and recently featuring for Germany at the World Cup. He began his career at Manchester City, making three first-team appearances before moving to Germany in 2020. Nmecha currently has four years remaining on his contract with Dortmund, but a release clause of €80 million (£69.3m) will not become active until next summer.
Sources suggest Dortmund could be willing to accept a fee of around £52 million (€60m) for Nmecha this summer, given the level of interest in the player. Neville highlighted this potential value during commentary on ITV, stating that United need to explore options beyond Fernandes if West Ham’s valuation proves too steep. He praised Nmecha’s performance, noting he “looked outstanding” and possessed “absolutely everything.”
Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright and ex-Everton forward Duncan Ferguson have also offered positive assessments of Nmecha’s abilities. Wright pointed to his ability to break lines and get into the box, while Ferguson praised his athleticism and strong right foot. United have already agreed a deal to sign Atalanta’s Ederson, but are still seeking to strengthen their midfield following Casemiro’s departure and the potential move of Manuel Ugarte to AC Milan. The addition of Nmecha would provide further depth and quality in that area of the pitch, offering manager Michael Carrick more tactical flexibility.
