Manchester United are weighing a potential move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence, according to a report from Football Insider. This comes as United continue to bolster their squad with additions following the signings of Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, Karl Darlow and Tynan Thompson this summer.
The report suggests that Spence has emerged as a target for United after impressing during England’s recent run to the World Cup semi-finals. While a surprise inclusion in Thomas Tuchel’s squad, Spence reportedly proved his worth with several key performances. United manager Michael Carrick is believed to be impressed with the 25-year-old’s displays.
Spence offers versatility, being able to play as both a left-back and right-back, a quality that could be valuable to United. Gary Neville has previously praised Spence’s ‘aggressive’ defending and ‘tenacity’. Tottenham currently value Spence at £40 million, a fee which proved a stumbling block for Inter Milan, who have withdrawn from negotiations.
Separately, United have renewed their interest in Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, submitting a new ‘enquiry’ regarding his availability, as reported by The Sun’s Samuel Luckhurst. Tchouameni has reportedly agreed to a new contract with Madrid, but United believe a deal worth £70 million could still be possible. It is suggested that Madrid might be open to selling the Frenchman to create space for Manchester City’s Rodri, who has been heavily linked with a move to the Spanish capital.
In other transfer news, Manchester United have missed out on Crysencio Summerville, who is set to join Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal from West Ham United. Fabrizio Romano confirmed a ‘verbal agreement’ worth £55 million plus £10 million in add-ons, with Summerville giving the transfer his approval. Roma reportedly attempted to secure Summerville’s signature until the very end, but the financial incentive of a move to Al-Hilal proved too strong.
