Manchester United are hesitant about pursuing a deal for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, viewing the operation as “really expensive” according to Fabrizio Romano. The development comes as United prepare for a significant midfield overhaul this summer, with Casemiro departing for Inter Miami and Manuel Ugarte attracting interest from clubs in Italy and Turkey.
United initially identified Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest as a priority target, however, reports from The Athletic and Fabrizio Romano indicate Forest are demanding a fee in excess of £100 million for the player. Further complicating matters, TEAMtalk understands Anderson has already agreed personal terms with Manchester City.
While Anderson was considered a key target, Gianluca Di Marzio reports that manager Michael Carrick actually prioritizes Tonali. Newcastle, however, are reportedly seeking a fee of around €115 million (£100 million) for the Italy international, a figure that exceeds United’s initial valuation of €100 million (£86 million).
Romano detailed that United officials recently travelled to Italy to discuss potential transfers, including a move for Tonali, but the high asking price and the player’s salary demands are causing concern. Despite the clear appreciation for Tonali, the club is questioning whether the deal represents good value. United are simultaneously pursuing Atalanta’s Ederson, indicating they intend to bring in multiple midfielders this transfer window.
The situation is fluid, and United may explore alternative options if they deem Tonali’s price prohibitive. This potential setback could force Carrick to reassess his midfield targets as he looks to reshape the squad for the upcoming season. A successful midfield rebuild is crucial for United’s ambitions to compete at the highest level.
