Manchester United are considering a £20 million bid for Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin, according to reports from the Daily Record via TeamTalk. This potential addition comes after the signings of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, and following Casemiro’s departure and a significant injury to Manuel Ugarte, leaving manager Michael Carrick seeking further reinforcement in midfield.
The interest in Raskin stems from a perceived lack of mobility within United’s current midfield options. While Tielemans and Santos have arrived this summer for a combined fee approaching €100 million, neither player is particularly known for their dynamic movement or ability to cover large distances, a quality Carrick believes is essential for his system. Kobbie Mainoo’s physicality has also been noted as an area for improvement.
Raskin has impressed recently with Belgium at the World Cup, catching the eye of United’s director of football Jason Wilcox. However, the 25-year-old’s form for Rangers last season was inconsistent, even leading to a temporary spell out of the team under former manager Russell Martin due to concerns over his passing accuracy. Several other European clubs, including Real Betis, Villarreal, Atalanta, and Bologna, are also monitoring the player, increasing the competition for his signature.
Data from SciSports suggests Raskin’s current ability level, measured by his SciSkill score, is 65.8, lower than all of United’s existing first-team midfielders. While his potential is estimated to be 80.9, it still falls short of the current standard within the squad. Furthermore, Rangers are seeking a fee significantly above his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of £9.7 million, capitalizing on his recent international performances. This could represent a risk for United, as history suggests players who secure moves immediately after a successful tournament often fail to live up to expectations.
