Manchester United forward Chido Obi is in discussions with Bundesliga side Cologne over a potential season-long loan move, according to Football Insider. The 18-year-old striker has impressed within the United youth system, scoring 20 goals across all competitions for the club’s under-18s and under-20s teams this season.
Obi made his senior debut for Manchester United in February of last year, appearing as a substitute against Tottenham Hotspur. He has since made a total of eight first-team appearances, seven of which came in the Premier League. In May of the same year, he became the youngest player to start a Premier League match for United, aged 17 years and 156 days.
Manchester United are reportedly keen for Obi to gain regular first-team experience, believing a loan spell would be beneficial for his development. The club are not considering including an option or obligation to buy in the loan agreement, indicating their long-term faith in the player’s potential. Obi has yet to feature under new manager Michael Carrick, and a temporary move could provide him with valuable playing time.
Cologne are seeking to bolster their attacking options, particularly with the potential departure of winger Said El Mala. El Mala has been linked with a move to several Premier League clubs, including Liverpool, Tottenham, and Newcastle, after scoring 13 league goals this season. Cologne are hoping Obi can contribute to filling the void should El Mala leave this summer.
Talks between Cologne and Obi’s representatives are ongoing, and a loan agreement could be finalized in the coming weeks. This move represents a significant opportunity for Obi to test himself in a top European league and continue his progression as a professional footballer.
