Manchester City Identify Maresca as Top Candidate Amid Guardiola Exit Fears
Manchester City have identified Enzo Maresca as the leading candidate to succeed Pep Guardiola, should the Spaniard leave the club this summer. According to reports, there are growing fears within the Etihad hierarchy that Guardiola could depart at the end of the season, despite having one year remaining on his contract. The club's sporting director, Hugo Viana, is said to be leading contingency plans, with former City coach Maresca the preferred option.
Guardiola has consistently hinted that his decade-long tenure in Manchester is nearing its conclusion, recently stating he feels "closer to the end" of his time with the club. While no formal decision has been communicated, a report from The Guardian indicates a widespread feeling in football that a major change is imminent at the Premier League champions. Guardiola's immediate focus remains on securing a fourth consecutive league title, with City locked in a tight battle with Arsenal.
Maresca, who left his position as Chelsea manager in January, is considered a natural successor due to his deep understanding of the club's philosophy, having served as a coach under Guardiola. The Italian held talks with City about the role while still in charge at Stamford Bridge. However, any move is complicated by Maresca's existing contractual obligations to Chelsea, having departed with more than three years left on his deal, which could necessitate a compensation agreement.
The 44-year-old manager enjoys a strong endorsement from Guardiola himself, who labelled Maresca "one of the best managers in the world" last December and is understood to have approved of his potential appointment. Maresca's brief stint at Chelsea followed a successful season winning the Championship with Leicester City, showcasing his ability to implement a possession-based style aligned with City's principles.
Speculation around Maresca's potential targets has already begun, with reports suggesting he would be interested in bringing his former Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez to Manchester. Guardiola also commented this week that former captain Vincent Kompany would one day manage City, but noted the Belgian had "many years" ahead at Bayern Munich first. The situation remains fluid, with the club's planning contingent on Guardiola's final decision, which is expected after the season's conclusion.
