Manchester United consider move for Toulouse defender Charlie Cresswell
Manchester United are considering a summer move for Toulouse defender Charlie Cresswell as they look to bolster their defensive options, according to a report from TEAMtalk. The 23-year-old English centre-back, who has impressed in Ligue 1, is seen as an affordable target for the Premier League club.
United are said to be emerging as frontrunners for his signature, with the player reportedly very keen on a move to Old Trafford. Brighton, Crystal Palace and West Ham are also credited with an interest. Toulouse are believed to value Cresswell at between €25 million and €30 million should he return to English football this summer.
The potential move comes as United, under manager Michael Carrick, plan for a summer rebuild while on course for a Champions League return. While midfield and wide areas are priorities, the club is exploring cost-effective solutions to add depth in central defence. Cresswell, who joined Toulouse from Leeds United for €4.5 million in 2024, has developed into a key figure for the French side.
FootballTransfers' Ligue 1 expert Robin Bairner notes that Cresswell has grown steadily in France, showcasing physicality, aerial dominance, and leadership. He currently leads Ligue 1 defenders for goals this season with three. Bairner describes him as a confident, fast-talking defender not afraid to use the 'dark arts' to unsettle opponents, while acknowledging a move to United would represent a significant step up.
United's defensive planning is also influenced by Harry Maguire's expected new contract, which could allow for a younger defender like Cresswell to be integrated as a long-term successor. The club's advantage is believed to be Cresswell's reported preference for a move to Manchester, giving them time to assess their options before making a final decision.
