Manchester United emerge as leading contenders for Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers
Manchester United have been identified as one of the most serious contenders to sign Aston Villa attacking midfielder Morgan Rogers this summer, according to transfer reporter Ben Jacobs. The journalist, writing for talkSPORT, states that United are among a select group of clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea, and Paris Saint-Germain, who are actively pursuing the 23-year-old, while interest from Liverpool and Bayern Munich has reportedly cooled.
Villa are said to have placed an £80 million price tag on Rogers, who only joined the club from Middlesbrough in a £16 million deal in February 2024. Despite his relatively recent arrival, sources indicate the club 'won’t unduly stand in his way' should a suitable offer arrive, even if they secure Champions League qualification. Rogers has enjoyed a breakout season, contributing 12 goals and nine assists in 48 appearances across all competitions, a rise that has seen him linked with a potential role for England.
The potential move is understood to have the backing of interim United manager Michael Carrick, who is reportedly the frontrunner for the permanent job and has recommended that the club's new INEOS leadership initiate talks. It is claimed United have already 'made contact' with Villa over a potential deal, and that Rogers himself is 'very open' to a transfer to Old Trafford. This development comes as United plan a significant midfield rebuild, with a defensive midfielder also a priority to potentially replace Casemiro.
However, United face significant competition, particularly from PSG. Jacobs reports that Rogers is 'open to going abroad' and is an admirer of PSG manager Luis Enrique, which could facilitate a move to the French capital. The interest from multiple elite clubs underscores Rogers's rapid development into one of the Premier League's most coveted creative talents since his step up from the Championship.
Securing a player of Rogers's profile and potential would represent a major statement for United's new sporting project under Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS. It would address a longer-term need for creativity in the attacking midfield areas, with the club reportedly also considering a future succession plan for captain Bruno Fernandes. The reported £80 million valuation highlights the premium placed on top young English talent, setting the stage for a potentially protracted and expensive summer transfer battle.
